How the finder works
- The U.S. Census Bureau geocoder matches the address to a point and returns the unified, elementary or secondary school district whose current boundary contains it.
- We join that district's ID to the NCES district record: its schools open in 2024-25, their students, and the district's spending per student for fiscal year 2022-23.
- Where a state splits elementary and secondary districts, both are shown.
Questions about finding a school district
How does the district finder work?
The U.S. Census Bureau geocoder matches the address to a point on the map and returns the school district whose current boundary (TIGER) contains it. Its district ID is the NCES district ID, which PlainSchools uses to open the district record: its schools, students and spending.
Does this tell me which school my child is assigned to?
No. It names the district. Districts set school attendance zones and can change them every year; the district enrollment office confirms the assigned school.
Why does an address show two districts?
In some states one district runs the elementary schools and another runs the high schools. The Census Bureau returns both, and the finder lists both.
Is the address stored?
No. It is sent to the Census Bureau geocoder to find the district and is not kept by PlainSchools.
